I honestly think I like all of the main characters, but Dr. Erhardt is definitely the easiest to single out as my least favorite. Josh Weinstein was only around for one season (two if you include KTMA) and simply didn’t have enough time to develop the character and make him interesting. Then again, I think Frank (who I didn’t even say anything about yesterday) totally blew him out of the water with his first episode alone. I guess it’s because Frank’s older than Josh and must have had more experience with comedy, no? Yes. Probably. Whatever.
here, let me just rank ‘em all!
1. TV’s Frank: one of the greatest characters in the history of television. almost never fails at making me laugh.
2. Crow: prefer him with Trace, had some of the all time best lines in the theater and occasionally during host segments as well. Bill had some great lines and moments too but I like Trace’s voice and characterization much, much more.
3. Joel: cuz he’s sooooo stooonneed, maaaaaaaann haw haw yuk yuk. I dig his old fashioned sense of humor (is that what you’d call it?) and how he was a father figure to the Bots. Had some killer riffs (that I’m sure weren’t written by him most of the time, but they ARE coming out of his mouth and they’re mostly in terms of the delivery anyways), although I like Mike more from Seasons 5-7.
4. Dr. Forrester: Season 1 Forrester is a little odd, but with Frank around to play off of him (or whatever) he just became insane and incredibly likeable for such a friggin’ jerk. Unlike most people, I think the (very brief) interaction we see between him and his mother made sense and had it’s moments even though they could have used more episodes to try and develop it better. Or maybe it’s for the best that it was short lived though. It just wasn’t the same without Television’s Frank :’(
5. Gypsy: she can be a little shrill sometimes and Jim Mallon seems like he might be a bit of a creep (or at least just a jerk. hell, look who’s talking, i’m a bit of a creep myself…), but damn it I think she’s cute! It’s also funny seeing her act like a mother to Tom and Crow (and even Joel sometimes?) as well.
6. Mike: Man, this guy is a kook! Some of the other all time best riffs came from the mouth of Mr. Nelson, but he kind of petered out going into the Sci-Fi years. As I said in an earlier post, his mannerisms (or whatever) kind of bug me during this period. How many times did he do that “…Hello?” thing (which is pretty cute and all but come on!) or stare off into the distance (or at the camera) with a dumbfounded look on his face? These examples suck, but, like, sorry dude, I ain’t diggin’ it.
7. Servo: I prefer him with Kevin, and how can I not? Nine whole seasons vs. Josh’s measly one (or two)? Josh wasn’t too bad though and he IS pretty much the guy who created the character (Joel made the bot, but it was Josh who named him “Tom” and gave him his initial personality. Kevin took what was there and made him even better). Great singing voice, some great riffs, but he can get on my nerves from time to time. And just like Mike, I don’t really like him that much during the Sci-Fi era. Some of his lines are just too forced and kind of whiny. Basically, in the Comedy Central seasons, the SOL crew and the jerks down in Deep 13 are pretty much on par with each other, but Deep 13 has a slight edge because of Frank. In the Sci-Fi era, although the SOL crew starts off likeable enough (especially since Pearl’s a total asshole), I come to prefer Pearl and co. by Season 9 since I like their interaction with each other much more.
8. Brain Guy: This white honky mother fucker is just right as far as I’m concerned. He isn’t the funniest, but he’s never too irritating either. I like him more than Bill’s take on Crow as well, so I can say for sure that I like Bill just for playing this character! I always crack up when he wears a baseball cap backwards for some reason. I wonder who’s bright idea that was?
9. Bobo: I don’t like how quickly he turned into an idiot, but despite being a pretty one note character, he still managed to be pretty hilarious from time to time.
10. Pearl: It’s a little hard to get adjusted to her at first, and she’s really just cruel without having the slightest bit of charm that Dr. F had, but man there really are some pretty great moments between her, Bobo and Brain Guy! There’s a couple that I can think of in particular from Seasons 9 and 10. And call me crazy, but I even think there are some instances where Mary Jo kind of channeled Trace! No kidding!
11. Dr. Erhardt: see first paragraoh
christ, what a waste of time! i sure hope nobody reads this embarrasing crap!
